Sean Penn slams the Oscars, defends Donald Trump biopic


Sean Penn went on a rant in opposition to the Oscars whereas defending the biopic a couple of younger Donald Trump on the Marrakech Film Festival.

The 64-year-old actor, who has received two Academy Awards, spoke throughout a press convention Tuesday and accused the Oscars of being “afraid” of embracing “The Apprentice” starring Sebastian Stan because the president-elect, 78.

“The Academy have exercised actually extraordinary cowardice in relation to being a part of the larger world of expression, and in reality, have largely been a part of limiting the creativeness and really limiting of various cultural expressions,” stated Penn, per Variety.

The “Mystic River” star, who was casually chain-smoking throughout his rant, stated the Oscars and different award ceremonies must be seen as “tv exhibits first.”

“So I don’t get very enthusiastic about what we’ll name the Academy Awards [except for] when a movie like ‘The Florida Project,’ or ‘I’m Still Here,’ or, you realize, ‘Emilia Perez,’ of the issues which can be more likely to occur this yr,” he defined.

Penn then addressed the controversy over Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice,” which isn’t anticipated to be a serious contender throughout awards season, regardless of receiving an 8-minute standing ovation when it premiered on the Cannes Film Festival in May.

“The Apprentice” focuses on Trump’s rise to prominence within the Seventies and Nineteen Eighties and his relationships with legal professional Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong) and his first spouse, Ivana Trump (Maria Bakalova).

Trump has bashed the film and despatched a stop and desist letter to the producers over a scene that depicts him violently raping Ivana. Trump has denied the allegation he assaulted his late ex-wife.

Meanwhile, Stan, 42, claimed final month that his friends refused to take a seat down with him to debate the movie for Variety’s annual “Actors on Actors” collection. This was confirmed by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh.

“They have been too afraid to go and discuss this film, so I couldn’t do it,” Stan stated at a screening of “The Apprentice” on Nov. 19.

“And it doesn’t matter, that’s OK,” he continued. “It’s to not level a finger at anyone — I received to do lots of nice issues.”

The “Hawkeye” star defined that “we couldn’t get previous the publicists or the folks representing them as a result of they have been too afraid to speak about this film.” He added, “If it actually turns into that worry or that discomfort to speak about this, we’re actually going to have an issue.”

Briarcliff Entertainment purchased the rights to “The Apprentice” and launched it in theaters on Oct. 11. It made $12 million on a $16 million price range.

However, the movie obtained largely optimistic critiques from critics. It has an 83% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
