Sean Penn says he is ‘proud’ of Biden for pardoning Hunter, ‘one of many best individuals I do know’

Actor Sean Penn defended President Biden for issuing a sweeping pardon to his son this week, calling the now-cleared costs towards Hunter “one of many [most] horrible hit jobs of all time.”

The pardon, issued within the remaining weeks of Biden’s presidency, spares the president’s son from his upcoming sentencing in a pair of unrelated federal courtroom instances involving tax evasion costs and gun-related costs. The pardon would not simply cowl these instances but additionally any potential crimes Hunter Biden “has dedicated or might have dedicated” from Jan. 1, 2014 to Dec. 1, 2024. 

The president has faced wrath from some members of the Democratic Party for going by with the pardon on Sunday after he had repeatedly vowed he would not achieve this. 

However, others have strongly defended Biden’s resolution. Penn fell into the latter camp, telling Variety that he was “proud” of the president.

“Any father that didn’t do that will have been remiss,” Penn stated in a new interview with Variety. “I don’t know if I need to have a beer with someone who wouldn’t have pardoned Hunter Biden, being their son.”

Penn, who calls Hunter a “shut” good friend and “one of many best individuals I do know,” recommended the case towards the youthful Biden was politically motivated, calling it “existentially insane,” and a “hit job.”

“In half as a result of I’m shut with him, I’ve studied the case,” he stated. “And whereas there are technicalities inside one of many instances which are related to illegality, there’s nearly no precedent in any respect for the aggression with which he was charged.”

Penn stated he believed President Biden’s resolution was closely influenced by the looming risk of President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, which he referred to as a “harmful clown present.”

He did not consider Biden would’ve pardoned his son if he had received the 2024 election.

“I don’t suppose it was a lie; I believe it was a change of thoughts and circumstance,” he defined.

The actor stated he was pleased that the primary son would now have “the time and house” to probably assist others affected by substance abuse.

“This is a man who has taken on probably the most extreme dependancy, and has a lot to supply people who find themselves struggling or households who’re struggling by that,” Penn stated of Hunter Biden. “And I simply I’m glad that the likelihood is there now that he’ll have the time and house to have the ability to supply that assist to individuals, which I do know is what he desires to do.”

In an announcement after his pardon, Hunter Biden stated that he wouldn’t take the clemency as a right and deliberate to commit his life to serving to others battling dependancy.

“In the throes of dependancy, I squandered many alternatives and benefits,” he continued. “In restoration we will be given the chance to make amends the place doable and rebuild our lives if we by no means take as a right the mercy that we’ve got been afforded.
