‘Executed, Executed, Dead From Sickness’: The Grim Records From Syria’s Notorious Prison


SAYDNAYA, Syria—Syrians looking for lacking family members are combing the grounds of the nation’s most infamous jail, rifling by means of lists of detainees and chipping on the concrete flooring on the lookout for hidden cells or tombs.

Civilians, militia troopers, legal professionals and a rescue group from Turkey picked by means of heaps of garments left within the cellblocks of the military-run Saydnaya jail, and stared on the purple rope nooses hanging from a concrete wall behind the constructing. As many as 50 individuals had been hanged every day within the jail, the State Department mentioned in 2017.
