A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck close to the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu early Tuesday afternoon, triggering small tsunami waves.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 18 miles off the coast of Port Vila, Vanuatu’s coastal capital, based on the United States Geological Survey. The nation is about 1,000 miles northeast of Australia and contains over 80 islands with a inhabitants of about 300,000.
Tsunami waves of as much as 0.8 toes above regular tidal ranges have been recorded hitting Vanuatu’s shoreline after the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated.
The quake briefly prompted a tsunami alert for elements of Vanuatu, based on the U.S. Tsunami Warning System, which is a part of the National Weather Service. U.S. officers stated about an hour later that the menace had handed.
