Under North Korean Attack, A Ukrainian Unit Turned A River Into A Wall

When the North Korean eleventh Army Corps lastly marched into battle alongside the perimeters of a 250-square-mile salient Ukrainian troops maintain in western Russia’s Kursk Oblast final weekend, the lengthy traces of North Korean infantry—striding throughout open fields in broad daylight—ran headlong right into a wall of Ukrainian firepower.

All however one of many assaults resulted in bloody defeat, leaving as many as 200 North Koreans useless and wounded out of a complete deployed power of round 12,000.

And the assault that did succeed was a Pyrrhic victory for the eleventh Army Corps, based on one Ukrainian evaluation group. In Plekhove, a village simply south of the Psel River on the japanese fringe of the salient, a 100-person Ukrainian garrison initially held out in opposition to two waves of round 150 North Koreans.

But the attackers stored coming. “The North Korean troopers went to the assault en masse or, extra exactly, in a crowd,” Ukrainian journalist Andriy Tsaplienko reported.

The Ukrainian garrison in Plekhove lastly retreated when a 3rd wave of North Koreans attacked from the east.

But the retreat was a calculated one, based on the Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies. Ukrainian troops “didn’t cling to Plekhove at any value, however withdrew north of the Psel River.”

This put an imposing pure barrier between the mixed Russian-North Korean power and the principle Ukrainian unit within the space, the 61st Mechanized Brigade. “This forces the enemy to cross open terrain to assault positions whose format is unknown to them, all below strikes from UAVs and artillery,” based on CDS.

Dug in north and west and west of the winding Psel, the Ukrainians have been firing with abandon on the North Koreans and Russians who’ve been struggling to strategy the river, cross it and set up a bridgehead within the days since Plekhove fell to the North Koreans.

“Dozens of assaults over the previous few days have ended on the distant approaches to Ukrainian defenses,” CDS reported.

The failed assaults have added to Russia and North Korea’s rising tally of losses. In simply its first weekend of preventing, the North Korean eleventh Army Corps could have misplaced 4% of its manpower—a charge of loss that’s unsustainable over the long run.

The drawback for the Ukrainians is that surrendering any floor in Kursk is dangerous. Their salient measures roughly 12 miles by 12 miles. The calculated retreat from Plekhove put a five-mile-deep dent within the salient.

The Ukrainians “skillfully makes use of terrain and maneuver ways,” CDS crowed. But the Kursk salient gives little terrain—and sparse house to maneuver.
