Denis Villeneuve has one rule to make sure everybody focuses on their craft with out distractions.
In a latest interview with the Los Angeles Times, the three-time Oscar nominee director revealed that his film units have a strict no-phone coverage.
“Cinema is an act of presence. When a painter paints, he needs to be completely targeted on the color he’s placing on the canvas,” he defined, sharing the explanation behind banning cell phones from his units. “With a filmmaker, it’s a must to try this with a crew, and everyone has to focus and be solely within the current, listening to one another.”
“So cellphones are banned on my set, too, since Day 1. It’s forbidden. When you say lower, you don’t need somebody going to his telephone to have a look at his Facebook account,” he added.
Weighing in on his determination to ban the system from his units, the Dune filmmaker displays on his biases agaist cell phones.
“It’s compulsive. It’s like a drug. I’m very tempted to disconnect myself. It can be contemporary air,” the 57-year-old director mentioned.
On the work entrance, Villeneuve revealed plans to begin filming the third instalment of the Dune franchise, based mostly on Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah, in late 2025 or early 2026.
