At Los Angeles emergency shelters, wildfire evacuees flip to group assist amid uncertainty

Ash trickled down from a grey sky and the scent of smoke lingered within the air at present as Angelenos made cellphone calls to family members.

The widespread chorus: We’re OK. We’re secure. We’re at a shelter. 

The evacuees paced exterior the grounds of the Westwood Recreation Center in West Los Angeles at present. It is one in all 4 makeshift areas for wildfire evacuees run by the Red Cross within the affected areas. 

“The devastation, the destruction, I by no means thought this may occur,” stated Johnnie Burman, 64, an evacuee from Santa Monica who went to the shelter in hope of discovering his aged neighbor and buddy.
