China sanctions Canadian institutes, people over Tibet, Xinjiang rights row

Beijing has sanctioned two Canadian institutes and a number of other people involved with Tibet and Xinjiang points as tensions with Ottawa proceed to worsen.

The Uygur Rights Advocacy Project, the Canada Tibet Committee and 20 individuals from the 2 organisations had been positioned on the sanctions listing, the Chinese overseas ministry stated on Sunday, citing China’s anti-sanctions regulation.

Their belongings inside China have been frozen, all transactions and cooperation tasks have been banned, and individuals on the listing have been barred from coming into China, together with Hong Kong and Macau, from Saturday, in response to the ministry.

Of the individuals on the listing, 15 are members of the Uygur Rights Advocacy Project and the remaining are from the Canada Tibet Committee.

The transfer comes after Canada imposed sanctions on eight former and present senior Chinese officers earlier this month, citing alleged human rights violations in Xinjiang – dwelling to the primarily Muslim Uygur ethnic minority group – and in Tibet.

Chen Quanguo, the previous Communist Party chief of Xinjiang, and Wu Yingjie, former social gathering head of Tibet, have been each on the sanctions listing launched by Canada on December 10.
