Duke lacrosse accusations: Crystal Mangum, who accused three gamers of rape, now says she lied concerning the encounter

Crystal Mangum, the previous unique dancer who accused three Duke males’s lacrosse gamers of rape in 2006, igniting a nationwide firestorm, now says she lied concerning the encounter.

“I testified falsely in opposition to them by saying that they raped me once they didn’t, and that was incorrect. And I betrayed the belief of a whole lot of different individuals who believed in me,” Mangum stated on the internet present “Let’s Talk with Kat,” hosted by Katerena DePasquale.

The interview came about on the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, the place Mangum is serving time for a 2013 second-degree homicide conviction for stabbing her boyfriend.

“I made up a narrative that wasn’t true as a result of I wished validation from individuals and never from God,” Mangum stated.

On the podcast, she stated she hopes the three males will forgive her.

“I need them to know that I really like them, they usually didn’t deserve that, and I hope that they’ll forgive me,” she stated.

Mangum’s admission comes practically twenty years after she stated she was raped by former gamers David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann.

According to the Duke scholar newspaper, Duke Athletics declined to remark. The college, and the college’s president and head males’s lacrosse coach on the time, didn’t reply to the scholar newspaper’s request for remark. There’s been no reported remark from the gamers.

Party accusations and the fallout

The three had been arrested following the lady’s allegations of sexual assault at a celebration.

The costs introduced broad media consideration, pressured the cancellation of the workforce’s 2006 season, and price coach Mike Pressler his job. The district lawyer on the case was convicted of felony contempt and disbarred.

In April 2007, the state’s then-Attorney General Roy Cooper, who’s now governor, reviewed the case and exonerated the three males, declaring that the costs by no means ought to have been introduced in opposition to them.

Duke University and the three gamers reached an undisclosed settlement shortly after the costs had been dropped.

The metropolis of Durham settled a lawsuit by the three males in 2014. As a part of the settlement, Durham agreed to pay $50,000 to the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission.
