Greg Gumbel, a longtime CBS Sports broadcaster, has died of most cancers, his household stated Friday. He was 78.
Gumbel, a play-by-play announcer and studio host who beforehand labored for NBC Sports, “handed away peacefully surrounded by a lot love after a brave battle with most cancers,” his household stated in a press release launched by CBS Sports.
The assertion was signed by his spouse, Michelle, and daughter, Marcy.
“Greg approached his sickness like one would count on he would, with stoicism, grace and positivity,” the assertion says. “He leaves behind “a legacy of affection, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years within the sports activities broadcast business.”
Gumbel, the older brother of former “TODAY” co-host Bryant Gumbel, started working at CBS Sports in 1989. He left in 1994 to work at NBC Sports earlier than returning to CBS in 1998.
He referred to as two Super Bowls and hosted the NCAA “March Madness” match for years.

In 2022, Gumbel celebrated his fiftieth yr of broadcasting, CBS Sports reported.
David Berson, the community’s president and CEO, recalled him as a “large broadcaster and gifted storyteller” who “led one of the crucial outstanding and groundbreaking sports activities broadcasting careers of all time.”
“Greg broke limitations and set the usual for others to comply with,” he stated. “It is a particularly unhappy day for all of us at CBS Sports and the whole sports activities group. We will miss Greg dearly, and ship our deepest condolences to his spouse Marcy, daughter Michelle, and his total household.”
