Renowned tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain (73) succumbed to heart-related points on Sunday.
Hussain’s supervisor, Nirmala Bachani, stated in a press release that the maestro was battling blood-pressure-related issues.
Earlier, it was learnt that Zakir Hussain had been admitted to a hospital in San Francisco after experiencing heart-related issues.
Ustaad Zakir Hussain, the famend tabla maestro, was born on March 9, 1951, in Mumbai. As the eldest son of the illustrious tabla participant Allah Rakha, he was naturally drawn in the direction of music from a younger age. He accomplished his major training from St Michael’s High School in Mahim, Mumbai, and later graduated from St. Xavier’s College and additional solidified his basis in music and teachers.
Hussain married Antonia Minnecola, a kathak dancer and instructor. They have two daughters Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi.
Industrialist Harsh Goenka conveyed his condolence over Zakir Hussain’s passing on social media, saying: “The world falls silent because the tabla loses its maestro. Ustad Zakir Hussain, a rhythmic genius who introduced the soul of India to international levels, has left us. I really feel privileged to have recognized him by his reference to HMV and to have witnessed his unimaginable efficiency at our dwelling. His beats will echo eternally.”
Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore wrote, “Ustad Zakir Hussain’s extraordinary mastery of the tabla has created a timeless legacy on the planet of music. My deepest condolences to his household, mates, and the numerous admirers whose lives he touched along with his artistry. His rhythms will echo in our hearts endlessly.”
