Cillian Murphy’s not returning to the 28 Years Later franchise as an actor.

Fans eagerly awaiting the actor’s return to the franchise must wait a bit longer, because the Oscar winner received’t seem within the upcoming threequel. 

Although Murphy is concerned as an govt producer, producer Andrew Macdonald not too long ago clarified Murphy’s position within the movie, which is ready to premiere on June 20.

Macdonald defined to Empire, “[On] this, we wished him to be concerned and he wished to be concerned. He will not be within the first movie, however I’m hoping there will probably be some Jim someplace alongside the road.” 

He additional famous, “He’s concerned in the mean time as an govt producer, and I’d hope we are able to work with him ultimately sooner or later within the trilogy.”

The third installment reunites unique director Danny Boyle and author Alex Garland, with 28 Years Later directed by Nia DaCosta. 

The follow-up, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is scheduled to premiere on January 16, 2026.

Speculation about Murphy’s involvement arose after a teaser for 28 Years Later confirmed a zombie that some believed to be Murphy in make-up. 

However, artwork seller Angus Neill confirmed he was the performer in that shot. Boyle admitted he was warned this may trigger confusion, sharing, “I confirmed my girlfriend the trailer and he or she stated, ‘People will assume that’s Cillian.’ I stated, ‘Don’t be foolish.’ I ignored her. So I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie since.”

Murphy initially starred in 2002’s 28 Days Later as Jim, a bicycle courier who wakes from a coma to search out London ravaged by the “Rage Virus.” 

Although he didn’t seem within the 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later, Murphy is now again as an govt producer for the third movie, as reported by Deadline final January.
