Gov. Newsom joins handful of GOP governors elevating flags to full peak for Trump inauguration

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom will quickly elevate the American Flag on the state Capitol to full peak on Inauguration Day subsequent week, becoming a member of a handful of GOP governors and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson within the resolution.

Newsom’s press workplace confirmed the choice to Fox News Digital on Wednesday evening.

Following custom, flags on the U.S. Capitol and state buildings throughout the nation are flying at half-staff due to the loss of life of former President Jimmy Carter on Dec. 29, 2024. 

Flags quickly raised to full peak will return to half-staff on Jan. 21 for the rest of the 30-day mourning interval, which ends on Jan. 28 – eight days after President-elect Donald Trump might be sworn into workplace.

House Speaker Johnson additionally ordered that flags on the U.S. Capitol fly at full-staff for Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag probably being at ‘half mast’ throughout my Inauguration,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Jan. 3. “They assume it’s so nice, and are so completely satisfied about it as a result of, in truth, they do not love our Country, they solely take into consideration themselves.”

“Look at what they’ve performed to our as soon as GREAT America over the previous 4 years – It’s a complete mess! Flags have been flown at half-staff when former President Nixon was sworn-in for his second time period in 1973 after Nixon ordered the flags to be lowered following the death of former President Truman.
