Governor Reynolds declares Disaster Proclamation for Sioux County over new Bird Flu case | News

SIOUX COUNTY, Iowa (KWWL) — Governor Kim Reynolds has declared a Disaster Proclamation for Sioux County after a case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1 HPAI) was detected.

The case was detected in a flock of business layer chickens. This is the fourth detection inside poultry this 12 months, and the primary case since June.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is encouraging Iowa poultry producers, dairy farmers, and different livestock producers to bolster their biosecurity protocols in an effort to shield their flocks and herds. 

If poultry producers or these with yard birds suspect indicators of H5N1 HPAI, they need to contact their veterinarian instantly. Possible circumstances should even be reported to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship at (515) 281-5305. 

Clinical indicators of H5N1 HPAI in birds might embrace:  

  • Sudden improve in fowl deaths with none medical indicators 
  • Lethargy and/or lack of vitality and urge for food 
  • Decrease in egg manufacturing 
  • Soft, thin-shelled and/or misshapen eggs 
  • Swelling of the pinnacle, eyelids, comb, wattles, and hocks 
  • Purple/blue discoloration of the wattles, comb, and legs 
  • Difficulty respiration 
  • Coughing, sneezing, and/or nasal discharge (runny nostril) 
  • Stumbling and/or falling down 
  • Diarrhea
