Taipei –
Taiwanese lawmakers tackled and doused one another with water on Friday as President Lai Ching-te’s social gathering tried to dam the passage of payments they are saying might hurt the self-ruled island’s “democratic system.”
Scores of lawmakers from Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party had occupied the rostrum of the parliament’s fundamental chamber since Thursday night time and barricaded themselves inside — piling up chairs to dam entrances.
The DPP parliamentarians have been trying to cease three authorized amendments proposed by the opposition bloc, which might make it tougher for voters to oust elected officers who they see as unfit.
